Buying Blind: What happens when SPD isn't in the conversation?

A department orders new equipment. It arrives. It's exactly what they wanted. And nobody in Sterile Processing knew it was coming. Now SPD is reading the manufacturer's instructions for use and realizing the facility isn't set up to reprocess it. The camera head can be turned over in a reasonable time, but the cord that comes with it requires a dry time that doubles the reprocessing cycle. Nobody planned for that. Nobody asked. In another case, a department purchases a probe that requires VPRO for reprocessing. It's not approved for Sterrad. But the facility runs Sterrad. Now SPD is stuck with equipment they can't safely reprocess with what's in the building. The probe can't be used at all. This happens every day. Equipment and instrumentation are purchased without consulting the people who have to reprocess them. SPD signs the purchase order, pays the invoice, and finds out when the box arrives at the dock. Sterile Processing knows what your sterilizers can handle. We know what cycles your machines run. We know what your staff can safely and efficiently reprocess. We know what to look for. We know what to question. We catch what you don't know to ask. When SPD isn't in the conversation before the purchase, the facility pays for it through delayed cases, workarounds, and patient risk.

Sterile Processing is a stakeholder in the purchasing process, not a downstream consequence. When Central Sterile isn't at the table, the facility takes on risk it didn't have to.
